My dear Glad.

Many thanks for your letter from Sywell.  I am glad you had such an exhilarating time.  I can’t guarantee any leave by the 16th, as there seems to be so little going nowadays. However I see you have got a new Mahdi out in Nigeria, which I suppose may mean that Lugard won’t have you out there at once. However we will wait to see what the month will bring forth.  We are still out of the line & things are quite quiet here, though there is a lot of noise further south which makes one

imagine that things are moving down there, but we get no information here.  There is nothing in being mentioned in despatches, as they always mention you if you get anything otherwise.  As a regiment we didn’t do so badly & I fancy as fell [sic] as if not better than the other regiments in the Division. However I have not studied the list, as it would take such a time.
