Commentary

This clipping is a story by Sapper (H.C. McNeile), a British army officer who began writing fiction of his experiences during the war. Officers were forbidden to publish stories under their own names while on active service, so McNeile adopted the pseudonym of ‘Sapper’, as he was an engineering officer on the western front. His war stories were published by The Daily Mail and then collected and published by Hodder and Stoughton, for whom he was a bestselling author. After the war, Sapper continued to write, his most popular character being Bulldog Drummond.
