26. 8. 1916.

My dear Mother,

Many thanks for letters from you Father & Cecily & few copies of letters from G. which by the way I think I have acknowledged before.  As usual there is no news except that we are not actually in the line at the moment.  I have just been reading Wednesday’s paper, which makes things out to be very hopeful.  We seem to be gaining quite a lot as a whole & I should think it ought to increase.  I heard last night that the French had advanced 1500 yds. in places which is some gain in these times.  At the moment we

are in camp in a cornfield – though there is very little camp about it as the men are mostly sleeping under their waterproof sheets. I have managed to get some beer for them which is extraordinarily popular.
