Commentary

This newspaper clipping was kept by Peirs in his papers next to his letters home from Loos. It details and account by the Deutsche Tageszeitung of the attack on September 26, 1915 in which Peirs took part. One wonders what Peirs thought of the attack being described as ‘Napoleonic’?

Certainly, in his accounting of the battle, he describes the men performing their thankless task bravely, but the tactics which they were using, as well as the weapons they carried, were very much of the twentieth century.
